International experts and scientists expressed deep skepticism over the planned US anti-missile system deployment in Eastern Europe which could ultimately spark a nuclear catastrophe in Europe.Arms control experts, attending a recent conference In Berlin, stressed that the US missile shield will have a lasting negative impact on the West's relations with China and Russia both of whom see their spheres of interests threatened by the American missile expansion.
Goetz Neuneck of the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at Hamburg University made clear that the US missile project will seriously endanger long-term goal of lowering nuclear weapons worldwide.
The Russians will never be ready to reduce their stockpile of uclear warheads, if the American missile defense system is installed in Europe, Neuneck told the weekly Der Spiegel news magazine.
"Global missile defense is the end of strategic disarmament," added Neuneck, referring to US plans for deploying 10 anti-missiles in Poland and a radar track system in the Czech Republic.
US officials have heavily lobbied European capitals in recent weeks, especially Berlin, to get the nod for the stationing of the controversial missile shield.
Many experts believe there isn't anything like a secure defense against ballistic rockets because the potential attacker is always a step ahead by using counter measures like decoy balloons and a higher number of attacking missiles which are capable of penetrating the missile shield.
To intercept a ballistic missile in space is like shooting at a flying bullet with a bullet, according to experts.
This technological controversy has been highlighted in a report of the American Physical Society which has openly questioned the easibility of a functioning missile defense system.
Another argument against a missile defense remains the fact that it can disrupt the nuclear balance between the US and Russia, experts say.
They point out that the missile interceptors in Poland could also be transformed into offensive weapons.
Geoff Forden, an expert for strategic arms at the renowned US- based Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, said the American missile project was not only for defense purposes.
The US wants to be capable in future to lead conventional wars against nuclear-armed states, Forden was quoted as saying.
Experts are almost unanimous in their assessment that the American anti-missiles do not make Europe any safer but are in fact a major security risk as falling debris of an incoming missile with a nuclear warhead could hit European urban centers.
The US missile defense plan includes a system to intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) just minutes after launch, while their rocket boosters are still burning.
This "boost-phase interception" should be easier than targeting missiles in mid-flight because tracking a flaming rocket is easier than homing in on a relatively cool and easily disguised warhead sailing high above the atmosphere, experts say.
But destroying only the booster could leave the warhead zinging across the sky, said Ted Postol, a physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Precisely where the warhead would land would depend on when the booster was destroyed during its 4 to 6-minute burn.
"That would be difficult to control, so the warhead could potentially hit anywhere between the launch site and the target city, Even if you knew all the details, you couldn't be sure of what would happen in any given engagement," Postol said.

Should it go south towards ships waiting on the Pakistan coast, it would be still only a few hundred miles at sea to Dabhol. The trip from the Mediterranean would be farther (and thus more expensive for Enron to buy gas), but it was also the least likely route to be constructed. Estimated costs were almost $1 billion more than the route through Afghanistan, and engineering plans had not even started. No, the only practical route for the Caspian Sea gas was through Afghanistan and Pakistan to the border of India. All that was lacking was the political will to make it happen.

Teams of 'outside experts' were to take independent looks at the highly classified data used by the intelligence community to assess Soviet strategic forces in the yearly National Intelligence Estimates (NIEs). NIEs are authoritative and are widely circulated within the government. U.S. national security policy on various issues as well as the defense budget are based on their general conclusions. Although NIEs represent the collective judgment of the entire intelligence community, the lead agency is the CIA."Actually, Hessing writes, there were three B Teams: "One studied Soviet low-altitude air defense capabilities, one examined Soviet intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) accuracy, and one investigated Soviet strategic policy and objectives. But it is the third team, chaired by Harvard professor Richard Pipes, that ultimately received considerable publicity and is commonly referred to as Team B."
