CONNECTICUT'S LYME STORY. APRIL 2001 Michael Griffin. I sat there in the back of the court room, next to Michael's family, and watched that boy leaning over his table with his lawyer. I watched him spontaneously jerk the entire time. I listened to the Judge and the Prosecution. Michael's intelligence had been assessed. The Yale Forensic Psychiatrist assessed that Michael was not insane. He was very, very smart. How could he not be? His mother was a Math Professor at my alma mater, Southern Connecticut State University... Michael's face, and his demeanor... He was this great, big, 19 year old with the face and the smile of a child. He really was very, very sweet. 'Just sooo incongruent with why we were meeting in the courthouse... This would be a regular kid I would know from my own plain old regular neighborhood in Middle Class Connecticut...
Everybody I talked to, said he had clearly been psychotic, including my own psychiatrist, who was also a Yale Forensic Psychiatrist. We thought it was Lyme Rage. His mother said, "Suicide by Cop." She was right. But the kid had Lyme disease. Neurologic Lyme disease, and it clearly still resided in his body.
Bransfield described Michael's symptoms. Myoclonus was among them. I had to look up that term to be sure of the entire meaning... Yup. Fer sher. The entire time. Every single day, all day long, Michael would spontaneously jerk during that trial. He seemed not aware of it at all. He had his back to me, his head rested on his hand, and his elbow on the table, turning 90 degrees towards the judge... Blipp! <convulse>...
I blame myself, for the failure of activism, for not helping Michael or his family, or his doctors or his community, or his State of Connecticut, for letting this abuse by Yale, this Spinning of Lyme disease into LymeRIX disease, to sell a vaccine, continue... We failed to bring it far enough, and prevent this tragedy from happening. I wrote to his mother, to say "Hey", after this was all over. She never wrote back. Michael went to jail. The judge decided what Michael did was premeditated. I told the mother all along, no matter what happens we believe Michael is sick. I had the privilege of seeing it first hand. I guess I was too caught up in my own Lyme family problems... This WAS Lyme Rage, only not quite the spontaneous kind we know it to be. Many Lyme patients commit suicide, not only because of the utter misery of it, but because of the Stigma (see Sigal and Schoen, who said: "I call it Lyme Paranoia", referring to Neurologic Lyme disease, and not the Yale LymeRIX disease), and the Abuse and Neglect, by the State of Connecticut, despite our numerous appeals to the Governor for help. What does it mean when one Yale Psychiatrist believes Michael was sane, while the other did not? NOTHING in Michael's history was abnormal except the Lyme disease. I listened to the videotaped Psychiatric interview. I thought that Psychatrist was SO harsh and SO mean, and SO crude, the way he asked questions about Michael and girls... and stuff like that. I guess, the usual Psychiatrist stuff. Asking you bizarre questions... stuff you've never thought of in your life... and it was also the AGGRESSIVE way this State Hired Gun asked this kid questions... I felt embarassed for everyone in that courtroom... I felt sick. I felt embarassed even for that mean Psychiatrist, himself. How could he even think of such things???? What does it have to do with anything??? It was ABUSIVE. Yet another rotten thing the kid had to go through, because he had Lyme disease. I so often wonder, Does Michael ever think of me, thinking of him? Since I told him I would never forget him, and I meant it. I wish I could talk to him, in jail, wherever he is, and say, "Michael, we haven't forgotten about you. We ARE still trying..." Nobody was hurt here, in this incident. Nobody was killed. Michael is still alive, only in jail, and God only knows what kind of treatment he is getting. I know it can be the wrong thing, and I know that result can be bad, in the case of a permanent brain infection, an encephalopathy... Of course, I still think about him...
